I've not been understanding the negative reaction to this one -- I agree, it may be one of the best of the year.

It's perverse, but bracingly original. And if it's not a comedy, I've never laughed so much.

I am so glad you liked it. Great write up. I agree that it's definitely funny, but what I think makes it so satisfying is how it takes familiar situations and twists them into something original, bizarre, perverse, and sometimes even fun. The movie makes the viewer question whether they should laugh or squirm, yet I appreciate that it's so willing to defy audience expectations. It's an amazing movie to see with a crowd. I know it will develop a following eventually, yet I really do hope more people give it a chance while it's in theaters. This movie has been dismissed by many for multiple unwarranted reasons. It's not Paul Blart: Mall Cop; it's not "yet another Rogen comedy"; and it's not the movie the previews are portraying. It's just great to see such a subversive yet entertaining movie playing in theaters everywhere...including malls.

You nailed it, as always, I loved this film too. You really did it justice.

I feel like I am missing out on something great because so many that I've talked to really enjoy this movie, yet I was left disappointed. The darkness and line walking isn't what bothers me, I am a huge fan of this kind of film making. However, I feel like Jody Hill was trying his hardest to make the next Big Lebowski by way of Taxi Driver and just missed the point.

There is the obvious opening credit sequence and story of a group of outcasts, but I think the main difference is, the Coen's obviously love their odd ball gang where I feel that Hill is simply making fun of a group of people at their expense.

I don't know, maybe it's me that is missing the point. I love seeing Rogen taking chances, but I just think this was a misfire.

A great film, and a great review.

What many don't know (and this kills me) is that this film is yet another Mickey Spillane/Mike Hammer riff...as was SIN CITY, as was Rorschach in WATCHMEN (isn't Rogen's character Rorschach?).

Read the early Hammer novels, in particular ONE LONELY NIGHT, and understand where it all started, where it all comes from.

Long-time reader and a fan, my first comment.

Just watched this, and your review is dead on. The thing that strikes me immediately after viewing are the emotions the damn thing raised: a little agitated, a little dirty; gut-level vindication, dread (at the very least, 'cause it looked like the mall cops got their guns near the end).

It strikes me that this generation's anti-heroes are a damaged breed, understandable but frankly defective by any standard of prosocial behavior. The Rorschach/Watchmen reference above fits, as does Jackie Earle Haley's other recent role, as a pedophile in Little Children. Walter (Bryan Cranston) in AMC's Breaking Bad, too - not charming, wacky, and little bit bad, but genuinely descending into psychopathy. And, shocker, every one is lovable.

Fun times, in movies and television. Odd, dark times in the U.S.A.

Thanks for such a cool site, smart and fun reviews, and for championing movies like Observe and Report.
