Great piece. Makes me want to watch it again. Can you write about "Ace in the Hole," with Kirk Douglas? I just saw it for the first time and loved it. As much as a lovable rougue Harry Lime is, I can't imagine any protagonist as unlikeable as Chuck Tatum. But, I could not help but see if he would escape his inevitable demise.

"The Third Man' is one of my favorite movies for all of the reasons you described so well. I especially enjoyed the end with Anna walking past Holly Martins without a flicker of recognition. Wonderful!

Wonderful article. I love your phrase “an oddly gorgeous Orson Welles”. There’s no other actor who could have captured everything that Harry Lime needed to be – sneaky, slimy and so subtly sexy. Joseph Cotten’s Holly Martins is sheer celluloid perfection and Alida Valli lights up the screen more than Bergman ever could. “The Third Man” is my favorite movie because it allows you to experience a whole plethora of emotions as you watch it. And I tear up too when Holly sees Harry hiding in the doorway – what an entrance and what a silent but powerful exchange of emotion between the two. The entire movie is a love story; a love story between characters, a love story between the director and his amazing location and a love story between the viewer and every second of the film. I’ve never understood why “Casablanca” is the ultimate romantic movie – a good movie sure – but one viewing of “The Third Man” is enough to make your heart break and Kleenex shares rise. “The Third Man” is the perfect movie and it ages like a fine wine, getting better and better with each viewing.
