One telling omission from Sin City, which dogged my thoughts throughout the movie: at one point, Marv tells someone, "She came to me for help -- but I was too drunk." Rourke could have given that some feeling.

You rock,as always! This is the perfect piece to ring in the new year. Her are a few shallow comments on my behalf....Worst make up:I'm a little mixed on this one,and I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain.I'm personally thinking of the makeup on Land of the Dead.Even as I'm thinking of this,I am also thinking of the awesome makeup it does also have in there, with the zombies and all.I'm thinking about the makeup done on Simon Baker(I'm not sure if this is the right "actor").I am talking about the guy with the lead role.It was funny to me because it seems like as you go along,he has more and more makeup, from one scene to the next!!For,me,it just adds another level of comedy to this movie!!Also,it is funny because I have always loathed Mr.Cruise, but I have actually liked some of his movies in recent years! It seems like the crazier he gets, the more I like his work!!Go figure....

I'll give you everything on this list, even though I don't completely agree. BUT KING KONG BLOWS MAJOR ASS!!! In every way. And I'll argue that til my death. Horrible. What's the matter with you?

Tiffany LaFontanelle

What's the matter with her??

At least she has manners, Patricia. Where are yours? I, too, was disappointed with Kong, but there's a respectful way to discuss it. Which is why I won't call you a douchebag.

OMG- Good Night and Good Luck, awesome, awesome, awesome...and Syriana was pretty fun...I like watching Matt Damon fuck shit up.

Interesting post. You've convinced me to take the time to see King Kong...at a 3$ theatre tho.

Ok, mad props (or is it big ups?) for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang! It was my favorite movie of the year, simply because of how much fun I had while watching. I had the rare opportunity to see it in theaters with a packed house... which means that I saw it opening day. I read a review of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that I definitely agree with. It was something along the lines of, "I don't care if anybody else sees this movie, it was made for me, exclusively."

Although, I am sad that you missed General Clooney's cavalcade of wonder, (Read: Syriana and Good Night and Good Luck.)

I missed Oldboy in theaters, which totally sucks, but I do own it on DVD, which doesn't suck as much.

Great DVD list, Kim.
Agree on each. Well, except for The Devil's Rejects--I haven't seen it.

I would add a few to your list. The Bela Lugosi Collection--if for nothing else than Ulmer's The Black Cat. I would also add Bresson's Pickpocket. And Le Samourai. And Misoguchi's Ugetsu. Talk about sublime.

On your advice I'll give Sin City a chance. I just have an allergic reaction to hip "self-conscious" noir stylings. As for "neo-noir", A History of Violence worked for me. So did A Simple Plan, One False Move, & a little further back, Night Moves.

BTW: In reference to the glorious Val Lewton box set, I read James Agee's wonderful review of Curse of the Cat People last night before watching it again. It's in Vol. 1 of his Agee on Film. Love the guy.

Yeah, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE pretty much rocked--I hadn't thought about the whole Norman Rockwell-HISTORY OF VIOLENCE-BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN thing. . .cool!

And, yeah, Heath Ledger pretty much kicks ass--although I have yet to see Phillup Seymour Hoffman in CAPOTE (a to-do this week).
