You are brilliant. Ishtar is one of my all-time favorite films. Hoffman is a genius and should have been nominated for the Academy Award. Beatty has never been funnier. His comic timing and characterization in this film are a tour-de-force. I also love Frankenheimer's All Fall Down (62) and Penn's under-rated Mickey One (65). Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller (71) isn't just one of the best (alternative) westerns ever made, it's also one of the best films of the seventies. Beatty's best all around effort was of course Reds (81), and isn't it fascinating that his follow-up film after winning the Oscar for Best Director was Ishtar (87)?

I for one am personally glad that Beatty passed on Kill Bill and suggested David Carradine to Tarantino (even though I think the film is crap) because Beatty proved once again how smart he was by this refusal - he doesn't need an obligatory Tarantino "comeback" role, he hasn't gone anywhere (even if his last film was Town & Country, 01) - he's still Warren Beatty.

"Safe Men" is another "mistaken identity" comedy that features a duo of singer/songwriters and puts them in a dangerous position.
Steve Zahn and Sam Rockwell are hilarious as the terrible singer/songwriters - highly recommended. Very Ishtar-esque.
